Guess Who’s Cooking for Dinner? Sam’s the Man at Kroc Kids Event

Fork It Over for Kids is an event to raise money for scholarship fund helping underprivileged kids.

Who better to ask than Sam the Cooking Guy (Sam Zien) whether the fish taco is San Diego’s signature food.

His response? Absolutely.

“I’m completely happy having a fish taco represent San Diego,” he said before adding: “But the thing with the fish taco is if you don’t live here it doesn’t sound very good.”

He recalls an outing to Rubio’s where he ordered them for his visiting parents―and the faces they made as a result. After a little pep talk, they gave the tacos a try and were pleasantly surprised.

But fish tacos aren’t on the menu when Zien performs a cooking demonstration at the ’s fourth annual Fork it Over for Kids event.

Instead, he’ll be making some grilled delights—Asian sesame meatballs and a cheese and pastrami sandwich. Even a grilled romaine salad.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, and features hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and a silent auction in an effort to raise $50,000 for the center’s scholarship fund. The fund allows community members who can’t otherwise afford it to take part in Kroc Center services, and 100 percent of the proceeds go toward the cause.

“It’s a wonderful night,” Zien said of the event. “There’s such a sense of community in this one.”

Tickets start at $50. For more information or to reserve seating, call 619-269-1547.
