From Yosemite to the Foothills: Gallery Features Emily Tryforos

Retired teacher who discovered talent for art will show her work near ball fields through Oct. 5.

Emily Tryforos’ interest in painting bloomed when she taught history to junior high students at in Santee. Teachers were asked to teach elective classes as well, and Tryforos was tasked with art.

“I used resources like Betty Edwards’ Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain because I had no background in art,” said the El Cajon resident, who goes by Emmy as well. “My husband was also an art teacher, so he was helpful, too.”

She ended up pursuing the skill after retiring in 1995. So far, she prefers acrylic to watercolors because it’s a more forgiving material and, while her forte is landscapes, she’s branched out to animals in an effort to discover her niche.
