Fresh & Easy in Spring Valley May Close Store

The British-based grocery chain prepares to pull the plug on its 199 U.S. supermarkets. Offers to buy the chain are already surfacing.

The British are leaving, the British are leaving!

Fresh & Easy stores in California and beyond will soon be sold or closed, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Owned by Britain's Tesco, the 199-market grocery chain never quite caught on with American consumers.

Analysts said the recession was partly to blame – Fresh & Easy debuted in California, Nevada and Arizona in 2007, just as the economy was tanking. But, ultimately, shoppers didn't warm to the concept.

"Though it attracted a small group of loyalists, Fresh & Easy largely failed to capture the imagination of American consumers who proved unaccustomed to British-style ready meals, self-service cash registers and unfamiliar store layouts," the Journal said.

Tesco's CEO told the paper: "It's likely, but not certain, that our presence in America will come to an end."

Offers to buy all or part of the chain are already trickling in, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

In the La Mesa area, the closest Fresh & Easy locations are on Campo Road in Spring Valley and on Navajo Road in San Carlos.

I love this store, it has better prices than Albertsons which is the closest grocery store, coupons are good and the self-service was very easy to adapt to. Store layout? no problem. Hope it stays open.

I LOVE this store .....Easy, Efficient, Good prices and the SIZE is Perfect, I don't have to walk a mile thru isles filled to get a gallon of milk, in and out just like that! I have their name brand for all my basics, olive oil, vinegar, pepper, herbs, flour, pastas,to name a few, prices lower than regular brands but just as good if not better! I pray someone buys it so it sticks around!

I totally agree with the two comments above. Their products are of very high quality, no hormones in the meat, etc. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Really hoping they find a buyer or partner who won't change the quality they've presented. We stock our fridge with several of their gourmet heat- and-eat or grill-ready entrees and sides every week. I've even served them to guests!! I will be bereft if our Casa de Oro store closes....

I feel bad for people who fell in love with this store, (and neighborhoods where stores like Trader Joes or Sprouts wont open stores like where my mom lives in San Bernardino) but personally I felt it was inferior to Trader Joes which has basically all of the same "problems" as listed as attributable to Fresh and Easy in this article.

I LOVE this store !! The only store that had real quality meat as well as really good vanilla ice cream. And their prepared meals such as sheppard pie are fresh and easy. Please Don't Go !!
