Consumer Alert: SDG&E Rates to Go Up in September

About 25 percent of local customers will feel the squeeze, officials said. If you pay $100 a month now, expect to pay $15 more.

Will you be one of the 25 percent of San Diego Gas and Electric customers who are about to get a more expensive bill?

Better check your email and mailboxes, La Mesa. The utility is notifying customers about rate increases set to take effect in September, according to NBCSanDiego.com.

SDG&E is sending out the notices to about 350,000 residential and business customers  this week, the report said, and placing the blame on the closure of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

How much extra will you be paying if you get the notice? Here's a guide – based on what you  currently spend, from the report:

  • $15 more if  your bill is $100 a month, and
  • $75 more if your bill is $250 a month.

SDG&E called the loss of San Onofre's contribution to the local grid  “an untimely reduction in our region’s energy resources.”

Officials said the advance notice will allow customers the chance to cut back on their energy use or seek more energy efficient appliances.
