That Sound You're Hearing in Mount Helix is Hammers

Construction Sees A 41-percent increase in the Mt. Helix market.

Construction activity in the La Mesa, Mt. Helix, and Spring Valley experienced a big jump over last week.  For October 17-21 reporting period, a total of 48 building permits were issued, compared to 34 for the prior week.

These numbers reflect a whopping 41-percent increase in construction activity for the 91941, 91942, 91977, and 91978 ZIP codes.

Solar photovoltaic installations leaped to seven, up from 3 the prior week.  While only one new home was slated for construction, it still represents a 100-percent increase over last week.

A good barometer for the health of any construction market is discretionary construction. The strength of any construction market lies not just in the total number of building permits issued, but in the type of work being done and in the dollar-value of the construction projects.

When construction activity is disproportionately slanted to "must have" construction, such as roofing, water heaters, and plumbing, the market is in a slump. Owners are only spending money on the bare essentials.

Conversely, when we see discretionary projects like residential remodeling, new pools and spas, and commercial starts for new businesses, it's safe to say that - at least for the period in review - things are on a decided uptick. And that's the clear case for construction this week.  There is a healthy balance of must-have's and discretionary projects.

Finally, a note of thanks to Mount Helix Patch editor for allowing us to share current construction news with his readers.  Admittedly, we fumbled a few times getting started, but Eric was exceptionally gracious and patient with us. With his permission, we hope to offer current construction news, every week, to Mt. Helix Patch readers.
