The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said local tsunami effects were possible — but “based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.”

Science reporter Gary Robbins of U-T San Diego reported: “The quake, which hit at 12:02 p.m. Mexican time, was recorded on a seismometer in Borrego Springs, which is located about 1,700 miles west of the epicenter of the quake. The energy arrived within minutes of the fault breaking.”
