Citizens File Petition To Put Term Limits On Ballot

Originally published 10:29 am Nov. 5.

Backed by the La Mesa Citizens Oversight Committee and Councilwoman Kristine Alessio, the La Mesa Term Limits Committee filed a petition Tuesday to require term limits for the mayor and members of the La Mesa City Council.

To put the measure on the November 2014 ballot, over the next 180 days the group must collect 3,306 signatures, or about 10 percent of registered voters.

If approved, members of the city council can serve three terms before they must leave office for four years.

The city attorney must review the ordinance and paperwork in coming weeks but members of the committee hope to start collecting signatures by Dec. 1, according to Bill Baber, who filed the papers with the city clerk.
