AT&T Mentors San Diego County Teens; Part of $350M Investment in Education

Consistent with its $350 million commitment to education, AT&T teamed up with Junior Achievement Thursday, March 27, to mentor San Diego high school students on topics such as decision-making, career planning, and interview preparation at the Trade Street campus.

“Aspire Mentoring Academy provides an opportunity for employees to positively influence a young person’s life – helping them stay on track to graduate from high school and succeed in college, the workforce and beyond,” said Ignacio De La Torre, AT&T Regional Vice President of External Affairs.

The AT&T Aspire Mentoring Program is driven by AT&T employees who are passionate about making a difference. During a regular business workday, employees share life experiences and career advice through project-based activities and teach students how to manage their digital footprint. Employees also encourage students to take the pledge to never text while driving through AT&T's It Can Wait movement.

“Students need real-world role models who can engage and inspire them,” added San Diego School Board member, Richard Barrera, who attended the event and addressed the students. “The AT&T Mentoring Academy powerfully impacts young people—especially those who are disadvantaged. It is a model program that highlights the importance of empowering the next generation through mentorship.”

Aspire Mentoring Academy is a part of AT&T Aspire, AT&T’s $350 million investment in education, which is among the most significant U.S. corporate educational initiatives. The program, which has impacted over 1 million students in all 50 states since its initial launch in 2008, drives innovation in education through proven programs that address the high school dropout crisis and taps into the power of personal connections involving many of AT&T’s approximately 240,000 employees.
