'Our Planet, Our Home' Art, Poetry and Essay Contest Open to La Mesa Students

La Mesa area students are invited to take part in a an art and literacy contest celebrating sustainability and working from the prompt: "This is your city, your home; how do you envision bringing green to La Mesa?"

The contest, sponsored by Sustain La Mesa, is open to all K-12 students living or attending schools located within the boundaries of the La Mesa‐Spring Valley or Grossmont Union High School Districts.

Contest awards will be presented on the “Sustain La Mesa” Environmental Festival stage, September 7, 2013, 10:00 am, at Harry Griffen Park.

Winning pieces will be on display at the La Mesa Library during the months of September and October.

"Earth, water, air, animals, plants, energy, space, community, food, and fun. The impacts of our environmental choices today pass to future generations. This year, we wish to challenge students with a new theme:

'La Mesa' is Spanish for 'The Table,' the center of the home. We want you to consider sustainability. This is your city, your home; how do you envision bringing green to La Mesa?"

20 entries will be honored for special recognition, two in poetry and two in art for each of four age categories, as well as two essays each in age categories III and IV:

Category I — Kindergarten‐Grade 2

Category II — Grades 3–5

Category III — Grades 6–8

Category IV — Grades 9–12

Entrants need not submit work through their school; individual submissions are also accepted. Submit to: The La Mesa Environmental Sustainability Commission, 8130 Allison Ave, La Mesa CA 91942.

Entry deadline is August 26.
