Novel Idea: La Mesa Library Invites Local Authors to 'Come Write In'

About 200,000 aspiring novelists will be taking part in National Novel Writers Month events all over the country.

In honor of National Novel Writers Month, the La Mesa Library is hosting a writers gathering on Thursday nights throughout the month.

The library's Come Write In event offers space for collaborating and working, as well as free hot beverages and WiFi. The national event, known as NaNoWriMo for short, was started by a small group of writer friends and has grown each year. Writers are challenged to create a 50,000 word novel from scratch between 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 1 and 11:59 p.m. Nov. 30.

“We’re hoping to get people inspired and let them know that any achievement is possible," Heather Pisani-Kristl, La Mesa branch manager, said.

A spot inside the Friends of the Library bookstore has been set aside for local writers to exchange ideas, find inspiration, access reference materials and get their creative juices flowing from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 7, 14, and 21.

“It’s a chance to talk to other writers if they need help with character development or plot questions," Pisani-Kristl said.

Young writers are especially encouraged to take part in the event, as NaNoWriMo has a specially designed Young Writers Program.

Founded in 1999, event organizers estimate 200,000 aspiring novelists will be taking part nationwide this year.
