BEST BETS, CLOSE TO HOME

Where/when: La Mesa Women’s Clubhouse, La Mesa, 10 a.m. Saturday.

Why Go: To support local high school seniors by playing bridge, bunco and card games. The La Mesa Women’s Club is trying to create five $1,000 scholarships for college-bound teens.

Price: $20.

Where/when: Barnes & Noble, La Mesa, 1 p.m. Saturday.

Why Go: Aaron Snyder will discuss his book The New Diabetes Prescription, which is full of advice on how to improve your eating habits and health.

Price: Free.

BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER AFIELD

Where/when: San Diego State University, San Diego, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Why Go: If pop radio bores you, the New West Electronic Arts and Music Organization might give you a different perspective on what is possible in music. Includes audio installations.

Price: $10-15.

Where/when: Warwick’s, La Jolla, 3 p.m. Saturday.

Why Go: To satisfy your political curiosity. Whether you’re a fan or a foe, Tea Party darling Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky, has been riding high since his November election. He arrives to promote his first book.

Price: Must purchase book to meet Paul.

Where/when: Mount Laguna, Julian or Pine Valley, Friday through Sunday.

Why Go: San Diego’s rain last weekend meant lots of nice powdery snow for much of the back country. The weather might cooperate again this weekend. So dust off that sled or just put on a good pair of gloves for a nice snowfight. Keep an eye on Ramona Patch for updates on weather and road conditions.
