Circus Vargas and Sailboat Races Among Delights Awaiting This Weekend

Your kid-friendly guide to getting out-and-about town. Look for this list Wednesday mornings, and feel free to add your own tips in the comments.

If you suffered through the rain the past two weekends, take heart. The sun is back again March 3-6, and there’s more than enough to do outdoors to make up for lost time.

Your choices near La Mesa and environs include the proverbial three-ring circus, a regatta on the bay and a big day in Ocean Beach, where a new fair is taking place alongside the tried-and-true Kite Festival.

BEST BETS CLOSE TO HOME

  • Where/when:  Westfield Parkway Shopping Center, El Cajon, various times, Thursday through Monday.
  • Why Go: To catch one of several chances to watch Circus Vargas close out its El Cajon run. Three shows a day are set Saturday and Sunday.
  • Price: $15-$50.
  • Where/when: Sonrise Community Church, Santee, 6 p.m. Friday.
  • Why Go: Two young women will gain a title this week: Miss La Mesa or Miss Santee, both of whom will be crowned at this dual pageant. 
  • Price: $15-$20.
  • Where/when: Fletcher Hills Park, El Cajon, 10 a.m. Saturday.
  • Why Go: The Fletcher Hills Little League kicks off its new season by looking back at an old one. They are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the league’s victory at the Little League World Series. Players from the 1961 team are expected to attend.
  • Price: Free.

BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER OUT

  • Where/when: San Diego Bay, San Diego, 11 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
  • Why Go: To see sailors from around the world, including America’s Cup winners, join in the RC-44 Championship Tour, named for the type of sailboat in which they’ll be competing.
  • Price: Free.
  • Where/when: Ocean Beach, San Diego, Saturday.
  • Why Go: Make it a day on the beach with two big street fairs . The venerable  hits the Ocean Beach Recreation Center, for kite making and a parade, at 9 a.m. Then the newbie, , starts off at 11 a.m. with bands, skateboarding demos and an art fair.
  • Price: Free.
