Wanna Pickle? Quirky Paddle Sport Gaining Popularity In La Mesa

Pickleball is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles on a court with a lowered net.

The City of La Mesa recently made the following announcement:

If you are looking for a way to stay active and get a great workout in, Pickleball keeps the muscles moving, but most importantly keeps players entertained while enjoying the outdoors.

Pickleball courts are located at Collier Park tennis court in La Mesa on Palm Avenue. Pickleball is a fun game that is played either on a tennis court or badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Originally created in Washington in the 1960s and named for the creator’s dog, “Pickles,” according to the USA Pickleball Association, it is played all over the country now.

Players must bring their own paddles and balls. To find out how to purchase equipment visit the USA Pickleball Association’s website at www.USAPA.org.
