Young Declan Bardin moves fast on many tracks. Aside from being a fourth-degree junior black belt and straight-A student, he can now add Soap Box Derby driver to his list of expertise. In fact, he’s so good he qualified to take part in the 74th World Champion Soap Box Derby race Saturday in Akron, OH.
Just one hitch: Declan, a La Mesa Boy Scout, needs to raise $3,700 in the next five days to get there. As of early Tuesday morning, he had collected $1,323 of his $5,000 goal.
Toward reaching this amount, 11-year-old Declan has set up a website where people can read his story or make a donation. He’s also hit the streets looking for sponsors, and even attended last week’s City Council meeting with his family to ask for help.
“Some kids have raced for 10 years and never had this opportunity,” Declan writes on his website. “Please sponsor me, and I will race my VERY BEST on ‘25 Hill’ in Akron and make you proud to be my sponsor.”
