Patch Wins 3 First-Place Awards from Journalism Society

A photo gallery, a feature story and a history column were recognized with first-place award at the Society of Professional Journalists' annual awards banquet.

Articles and columns appearing in La Mesa Patch and Lemon Grove Patch were recognized with three first place awards Thursday by the San Diego pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The SPJ chapter recognized local journalists and their work at an awards banquet at Bali Hai on Shelter Island.

A photo essay by freelance journalist Chris Stone received first place in the online category. The photos accompanied an article about athletes from Patch towns competing in the Olympic trials

The Way We Were column by Helen Ofield appearing on Lemon Grove Patch won first place in the non-daily column category. Ofield is president of the Lemon Grove Historical Society.

A feature story about a new widow who bonded with a woman who lost her son to heroin by associate regional editor Ken Stone was cited for first place in the daily feature category. Another article by Stone about local political advertising received honorable mention in the daily political/government story category.

The SPJ honored TV anchor and blogger Loren Nancarrow, who has battled brain cancer, as the 2013 San Diego Journalist of the Year.
