Moms Talk: What Do You Tell Your Kids About Why Bad Things Happen?

Earthquakes, tsunamis, wars and political unrest can prompt a lot of questions from your children.

Welcome back to Moms Talk, a weekly feature on Patch that's part of our initiative to reach out to moms and families. Moms Talk isn't just for moms, though, it's also a place for dads, grandparents and the diverse families who make up our community.

Each week in Moms Talk, our Moms Council will take your questions, give advice and share solutions. Moms Talk will be your place to drop in for a talk about the latest parenting hot topic. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today.

If you are interested in becoming part of the Moms Council, please contact your local Patch editor. E-mail Eric Yates, Mount Helix Patch editor at eric.yates@patch.com or Christine Huard, Lemon Grove Patch editor at christine.huard@patch.com.

Here's our discussion topic this week:

But one that is presumably the most difficult to answer is also the most simple: why? And it's not just for natural disasters. There are myriad tragedies and bad things that can prompt this childlike curiosity. Sometimes even adults don't have all the answers for questions of this magnitude. Depending on your belief system, both faith and science can play a pivotal role as well.
