Mississippi Memories: TyShaun Wagner Had Super Sonic Time after Title Game

Grossmont High student had a celebratory meal when his cousin won a state football championship.

Every Thanksgiving, TyShaun Wagner travels to his home state of Mississippi with his mom for some quality family time. TyShaun says there’s not much in Clarksdale except “houses and family”—including his dad—but he always has fun.

A few years ago, they made the trip for another special occasion: Cousin Brandon Strong was playing a state championship football game, and his team, the Wildcats, was one of the best.

“Everyone in my family went—my aunts, my uncles, everyone,” said TyShaun, 17, who attends Grossmont High School. “They won, and after the game we went to Sonic.”

TyShaun says his cousin came out to La Mesa to play college football at Grossmont, but has since moved back to Clarksdale. And Strong isn’t the only one who’s good at sports—in fact, it seems to be a family trait.

“I grew up around sports,” TyShaun said. “My mom plays softball in a league in North Park, and I’ve done karate, football, basketball and soccer. I had to quit basketball to play football and in the off-season I play baseball.”
