Kumeyaay Lake Campground Reopens

After being closed to the public for almost two years, individuals and families were able to reserve campsites for overnight use at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground in Mission Trails Regional Park. Reservations opened Friday, May 23.

Those wishing to make an online reservation for the overnight camping can go to activenet.active.com/sdparkandrec. Overnight stays are $20 a night per campsite.           

Park visitors have been allowed access for day use of the campsites, but have not had access to overnight camping since it was closed by the City of San Diego due to budget constraints. 

Councilmember Scott Sherman, whose district includes the campsites and Mission Trails Regional Park, was instrumental in the push to have the campgrounds reopened to campers wishing to enjoy the park’s breathtaking scenery, plants and animals at night.  

Funds were restored as part of the City’s FY2014 mid-year budget update. Councilmember Sherman is also the Chair of the Mission Trails Regional Park Task Force.

The campground offers a number of activities for people of all ages. The second Friday of each month, the public is invited to join members of the San Diego Astronomy Association at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground Overflow Parking Lot to view the universe through high-powered telescopes.  

On the second and fourth Saturdays at 8:30 a.m., join a Volunteer Trail Guide for a free guided nature walk that leaves campground entry station. 

“We’re very grateful to Councilmember Scott Sherman for working together with his Council colleagues to bring overnight camping back to the Kumeyaay Lake Campground,” said Jay Wilson, Executive Director of Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation. “Camping here is a great way for San Diegans to experience the wonders of our park at night and during the day, all while staying within the City of San Diego.”
