Katie Still Waiting: Canine Was Rescued From High-Kill Shelter

La Mesan Peggy McTaggart is looking for a forever home for this German shepherd mix.

Peggy McTaggart would adopt Katie, a German shepherd mix, if she didn’t already have three dogs and five cats.

Since January, McTaggaret said she’s been trying to find a home for Katie, who came to San Diego from the high-kill Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernadino. A scheduled adoption fell through.

“She’s a great dog, but she needs to be the only animal,” said McTaggart, who lives near Sunshine Park near Rolando School and has already found forever homes for the two other dogs Katie came with. “She’s a happy and friendly dog. She likes people.”

Katie, who is around 4 years old, is now housed in a boarding facility in Lakeside with funds raised through a ChipIn website account. The owner there has trained her a little, getting her used to the other animals around. Whoever takes her would need to have patience, and be able to work on socializing her.

McTaggart has always been an animal lover—she wants a pig next, but her family will only go so far as giving her a picture of one on a greeting card. She’s worked with the Feral Cat Coalition and has only rescued animals herself.

“I would send my husband [to the shelter] and say, ‘Go ask them what’s the next dog they’re going to euthanize,’ ” she said. “That’s the kind of dog I take. And whatever their problem is, we deal with it—we’re lifers.
