Girl Scouts Deliver Crocheted Hats to Newborn Babies at Grossmont Hospital

Since December 2011, close to 1,000 crocheted hats have been delivered to the babies at Grossmont Hospital.

As part of a yearlong handiwork project, the Girl Scouts Cadette troop #6141 in La Mesa, spent a year knitting and crocheting 520 hats for the newborn and premature babies at Grossmont Hospital, which they delivered to the babies on Thursday.

Beginning in July 2011, the 5th and 6th grade girls began learning how to crochet – meeting weekly under the direction of co-leaders Bonnie and Jossie Stinchcomb.

Beginning in January of this year, the girls continued to make hats, while also learning how to sew. In addition to the hats, they sewed and stuffed 12 pillows for the hospital, which were delivered Thursday, bringing an end to the yearlong project.

They also taught two other younger scout troops and their own Cadette troop how to crochet in hopes that other girls in the future may want to continue this  project (or just learn how to crochet!).

This service project is called the Silver Award and is the highest award a Cadette Scout can earn.  It requires 50+ hours of time and effort.  It must also relate to community service and must be something that the girls care about.

In the Fall 2012, the girls hope to attend an awards ceremony at Scout Headquarters in Balboa Park, where this award will be conferred upon them.

Bonnie Stinchcomb said that they are incredibly  proud of the patience, care, time, compassion and generosity that these girls have showed during this project.
