Easter Sunday Service Guide

There are plenty of options in Mount Helix, Casa de Oro and Spring Valley where you and your family can celebrate Easter Sunday.

For those of the Christian faith, Easter is a celebration of the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. Celebration turns to sorrow on Good Friday, marking the crucifixion of Jesus. Two days later, joy is restored with Easter Sunday, the day Christians believe Jesus triumphed over death and was resurrected, offering eternal life to all.

Locally, one of the longstanding traditions is an Easter Sunrise Service atop Mount Helix in the Nature Park and Amphitheatre. The first service was held there in 1917. This year is the 94th such service that will be held, and in La Mesa will host it. This is the second time Calvary Chapel has had the honor; the first was in 2000.

Pastor Dave Riley said that the church is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The church has done other sunrise services before at other locations, but few are as enjoyed as much as those atop Mount Helix.

"It certainly is beautiful there," he said. "We will be there rain or shine, proclaiming the message that He is risen."

The worship, which is provided by Calvary Church's worship team, will begin at 6:30 a.m. The Easter message, entitled "The Tomb Is Empty," will begin at 7 a.m. Parking and shuttle service will be available at The Brigantine Restaurant, the San Miguel Fire District station at 10105 Vivera Dr., and at Grossmont Center.
