Dump Your Junk, Shred Docs at Recycling Events This Weekend

Dispose of e-waste, sensitive documents and almost any kind of junk this weekend at cleanups to be held at Grossmont Center, Monte Vista High School and Steele Canyon High School.

Got junk? We all do. And some of it can be pretty hard to get rid of—not because we aren't ready to part with it, but because it needs to be disposed of properly.

E-waste, document shredding and general junk cleanups will be held in and near La Mesa this weekend at Grossmont Center, Monte Vista High School and Steele Canyon High School.

The Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to shred old documents and dump everything from old TVs and paints to tires and scrap metal

  • 9 a.m. to 4 pm. Saturday and Sunday near Fuddruckers at Grossmont Center at 5500 Grossmont Center Dr. in La Mesa
  • 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at Monte Vista High School at 3230 Sweetwater Springs Blvd. in Spring Valley.
  • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Steele Canyon High School, 12440 Campo Road, Spring Valley

The Spring Valley Chamber of Commerce invites everyone to shred documents and dump everything from old TVs and paints to tires and scrap metal at Monte Vista High School. Cleanup ends when dumpsters are full so come early.

The County of San Diego will hold a similar cleanup event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Steele Canyon High School.

At Steele Canyon you can also recycle your green waste, pick up free mulch and have papers shredded Saturday morning. EDCO is providing the green waste drop off and free mulch pick up—you must unload materials yourself.

There's almost nothing that can't be disposed of at the Steele Canyon collection. Almost.

You will not be shocked to know that the items not welcome at the event are business waste, ammunition, medications, explosives and radioactive materials.

Also, if you want to recycle a large appliance, call 877-713-2784 to make arrangements.

Here's want you can bring to Steele Canyon:

- Electronic waste recycling is limited to no more than five televisions or computer monitors per car. Other electronic waste being accepted includes; cell phones, cordless phones, rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries, printers, scanners, stereos, VCRs, DVD players, fax machines and fluorescent lights.

- Tire recycling is limited to no more than nine tires per vehicle. Tires should be reasonably clean. Passenger-vehicle tires only; no truck or commercial-vehicle tires will be accepted. If you have more than nine tires or tires with rims, call 877-713-2784 to make arrangements.

- For safety, leave hazardous waste in its existing container. Hazardous waste is anything marked with Caution, Warning, Danger, Poison, Toxic, Flammable, or Corrosive on the label. Make sure lids are fastened tight. Keep them away from people and pets when bringing them to the recycling event by transporting them in the trunk or the back of your car. Don’t transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds at one time. Containers should be no larger than 5 gallons.

Some of the waste products people can bring include aerosols, cleaners, antifreeze, auto fluids, used oil and oil filters, pesticides, solvents and pool chemicals.
