1972: Another Drowning Victim at Hansen's Pond

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening in your neighborhood, this week in 1972:

 

– Hansen's Pond, a watering hole popular with many teenagers in the Spring Valley area, claimed its second drowning victim in less than a month. Ruth Ann Artens, 14, of Spring Valley, was playing on a raft with friends when they decided to swim to shore. Ruth became tired and began to sink under the water. Her companion, who also nearly drowned in the process, tried to save her, but was unsuccessful.

Scuba and search and rescue teams arrived at around 6 p.m. Ruth's body was discovered at 7:30 p.m. Her death comes just weeks after 8-year-old Kenneth Rainey drowned in the same pond on July 19.

–The Mt. Miguel High School marching band are gearing up for competitions, as they were set to compete in five major events. The "Marching Matadors" are rated as one of the best bands in the state. They are competing to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, if they were to win the competitions. Mt. Miguel represented San Diego at the New Year's Day event in 1963, '64, '66, '69, and '71.
