Physically fit seniors: La Mesa health library has exercise tips

The Grossmont Healthcare District’s Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host a free senior discussion group presentation on “Keeping Yourself Fit,” from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The public is invited to attend, and RSVP is not required. For more information, phone the library at (619) 825‑5010 or visit www.herricklibrary.org.

The speaker will be Vickie Velasco, founder and instructor with the Feeling Fit Club, a local organization that promotes successful aging and good health in a safe, comfortable environment.

Velasco will demonstrate stretching exercises and specific movements that can improve flexibility and balance and prevent falls, as well as light aerobic activities that can improve strength and endurance and increase breathing and heart health. Velasco believes you are never too old to get moving, get fit and improve your health. Wear comfortable shoes because group participation will be encouraged.

Handouts will be provided and light refreshments will be served, according to Kathy Quinn, library director. The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is a consumer health public library specializing in health research information, accessible both on-site and via the Internet. The library is operated by the Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County.
