Your Library Is Here To Stay

Budget concerns threaten public libraries throughout the state, but the San Diego County Library system is focused on staying open to the public.

Everyone seems to be in a panic about us closing our doors.  Last week, I received lots of calls from customers asking about our hours and what days we would be closing.  I quickly realized they thought we were were affiliated with San Diego Public Library. "Nope."  I tell them.  "We are part of the County system and we aren't closing any time soon."

To me, and I'm sure many others, it just doesn't make sense to close our doors now. People need access to information and access to the internet so they can write resumes and apply for jobs.  After school kids need a place where they can stay out of trouble.  Things would be a lot harder for many people if we were closed.

A recent string of articles from the Union-Tribune present some awesome, but radical ideas about library services. The author says "let's double, not slash, library hours" and let's consolidate all 8 different San Diego County library systems into one, using the county's managament model.  It would be so nice if the library was open like my undergraduate library, 7am-midnight, 7 days a week.

You can be proud that your library is part of the county system.  The hours aren't going to change. You won't walk up to the library expecting service only to find a CLOSED sign.  The County libraries aren't going anywhere.  Your Casa de Oro Branch Library is here to stay.
