La Mesa National Little League Opens Season at Kuhlken Field

Green grass and grilled hamburgers greeted hundreds of youngsters for opening day in the middle of La Mesa as city officials salute the group.

Kids devoured hot dogs and hamburgers grilled by La Mesa Rotary Club and city officials made speeches Saturday morning as La Mesa National Little League opened its season at Kuhlken Field on University Avenue. Teams in brightly colored uniforms sat on the green grass as Councilman Ernie Ewin gave an invocation and  Mayor Art Madrid threw out a ceremonial pitch. League president Joe Lutz emceed the ceremonies, which included a playing of the national anthem played on a trumpet by a member of the San Diego Symphony. Teams assembled for a big group shot, and   trophies were awarded to last year's winners in majors and minors. A minor league game between the Rangers and the White Sox followed.
