Helix Alum Alex Smith Re-Signs with the San Francisco 49ers

Smith, who led Helix to two CIF titles in 2000 and 2001, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

After visiting with the Miami Dolphins over the weekend, free agent NFL quarterback and La Mesa native Alex Smith has re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers, according to multiple reports.

Smith, who led to two CIF titles in 2000 and 2001, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He began the free agency period on the heels of his best year as a professional, leading the 49ers to an NFC West title, and coming within one game of reaching Super Bowl. He threw for 3,150 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2011, against only 5 interceptions.

The Niners, under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, finished the regular season with 13-3 record, and an improbable comeback win versus New Orleans in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

San Francisco last week announced its pursuit of future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, thus leading to speculation that Smith's time in the Bay Area was coming to an end. He visited the Dolphins on Sunday. Had he signed in Miami, Smith would have been reunited with former Helix teammate Reggie Bush, the Dolphins star running back.

Terms of Smith's deal were undisclosed, but reports indicate that he will make an annual salary of around $8 million. Last season, Smith, 27, made a $4.9 million base salary, not including a $1 million incentive bonus for making the playoffs. The contract is said to be a three-year deal worth $24 million.
